New new project

For those of you what missed the announcement and wondered why the hell Les Dabel was slumming it with me, Roaring Studios in partnership with Marvel Comics (or whatever the correct legalese is for their relationship) has signed on to put out an original comic book set in the Wild Card universe.

Unlike the previous stab we took at making a Wild Card comic, this won't be an adaptation of previous stories and characters in the continuity. We're telling an all new story with some familiar characters and some original. I've signed on to do the first six-issue story line which we expect will later be concatenated as a graphic novel in six chapters.

Other folks in the consortium will likely follow up with stories of their own.

More as we progress...

Hoooooo! Great news! And posted at Westeros.org. I know a few people who will be very, very interested in this. :)

I don't suppose there's any word on the artist who'll be joining you on the first arc, is there?

Not as yet. Right now I'm working on the character descriptions and a sample page to use for artist tryouts.

O_O Yay!

Speaking as a very avid Wild Cards reader, I am glad to hear this news & will keep one eye scanning for the entry in the Previews catalog from Diamond Distributors.

Personally speaking, I hope Marvel does the smart thing & does NOT cross their characters over to the WC universe. I don't hold them in high reguard with recent events (Civil War, House of M/Decimation, Planet Hulk, ect.)

The Horn'd One

I don't think that kind of crossover is even on the table. The Dabels have been making their trade in adapting titles -- Feist's Magician: Apprentice, Hamilton's Anita Blake books, etc -- rather than adding on to the Marvel canon.

Woo-hoo! Good on ya! Wild Cards does not actually make me all that excited (just not my thing, I think, though I like your stuff in it), but I'll check it out.

And anything that gets you closer to, for god's sake, fixing up Hellblazer . . . well, you know. Constantine needs you, man.

Oh, I so know what I'd do with 10 or 20 issues of Hellblazer to play with...

Delighted to hear this news. To say the least. :D

A couple more questions, Daniel, if you don't mind being too bugged with them!

1) Will the new Wild Cards comic be contemporaneous, more or less, with our own time? I know Inside Straight is taking place circa 2006, and I wonder if this extends to the comic?

1a) Related to this, is it safe to assume that the Wild Cards comics will be "canon"?

2) What's the latest word on the Fevre Dream and Skin Trade books from Avatar Press?

Cheers,

Elio

1) The story I have in mind in more or less contemporaneous, but doesn't impinge on the Inside Straight stories at all. The idea of the comic book is that it be a genuine stand-alone. People shouldn't *need* to know the books to pick up the comic (and vice versa).

1a) Not perfectly. As a derivative of the books, it's not controlled by the master agreement that makes everyone play nice. I could, in theory, do something with, say, Walter Jon Williams's character that he didn't sign off on, and I haven't presented the characters who are specific to the comic book as folks to use in the books. That said, I am using folks from the books in the comic, and I'm being pretty careful not to do any violence to the author's original conception, so there shouldn't be a conflict.

2) The Fevre Dream comic is at the making-art-purty stage. They're over halfway done, but I don't know how much lead time they need before they start rolling the first issue out the door. The Skin Trade comic is still at the Daniel-make-scripts stage, but that should be finished in the next few weeks.

A standalone does indeed sound like the best approach. A couple of decades of continuity could be quite overwhelming if the comic was steeped in it. Will be very interested to see the finished product. :)

Good to know about the Fevre Dream comic moving forward slowly but surely. I'm itching to get my hands on it.

"And if this is known, better, if this is Fathomed, best, if this penetrates consciousness not just in scheduled 'quality time' episodes of meditative oasis, delivered in cc's and minutes a day, but verging to continuously, so one can use the word "Therefore" with sincerety.

Avatar Press (the guys who are putting out Lady Death) are looking for artists. And I think they are open for online submissions.

"Unlike the previous stab we took at making a Wild Card comic...."

Actually there were two comic series based in the Wild Cards universe. One was simply "Wild Cards", which told of Jay Ackroyd's investigations of the bombing of the Jetboy Tomb at the hiring by Dr. Tachyon; and the "Tachyon Journal" 4-part mini-stories that were printed in Marvel's Epic, An Anthology mini-series back in the mid-1990's. I have both, fortunately.
I've seen the first series on Ebay, but the Epic comics are harder to come by.

the future of the WC comic....?

With the recent announcement of The Dabel Bros. splitting from Marvel, will this affect the production of the WC comic?

Re: the future of the WC comic....?

It may do something interesting and nautical to the distribution end of things (about which I know *nothing*). At my level, apart from a little shuffling of personnel in the upper tiers, it doesn't seem to have had any effect.
